Mr. Viggers Kindness Tree Blooms Again!

“Last month, the Me to We group initiated a Kindness Challenge to promote more thoughtfulness in our school.  The Group wished to honour Mr. Viggers and the kindness tree he created in his classroom on our very first kindness challenge 4 years ago.  Our students rose to the wonderful challenge as seen by the number of leaves on our beautiful “Mr. Viggers Kindness Tree.”IMG_4767 (002)

RE:  June 29, 2017 – Early Release Day

Dear Parents/Guardians:

All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achievement and well-being.  On Thursday, June 29, 2017 an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day.  These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success.

As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 29, 2017 only.  Students will be dismissed early that day at 12:00 p.m. Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation at this time.  Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Parent / Guardian Survey – Timeline Extended

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As you may know, we are inviting parents and guardians to participate in a survey to support student achievement and well-being. The timeline for the survey has been extended to May 31, 2017. If you haven’t already had the opportunity to complete the survey, we would encourage you to please take 15 minutes to complete the survey online.

Paper copies are available in English, Chinese, Farsi, Gujarati, Hebrew, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Tamil, Urdu and Vietnamese.  If you prefer to complete the survey on paper, please contact the school to request a paper copy. If you complete the survey on paper, please return it to the school in the envelope provided.

The surveys provide the Board and our school with valuable information about how you feel about the school and your child’s education.  Results from the survey will be used to identify areas to be addressed, monitor progress, and plan strategies to support students.

The information you provide will be anonymous and individual responses will be kept strictly confidential.  Individuals will not be identified in any reports resulting from this survey.

We appreciate your participation in this voluntary survey. Your thoughts and insights will help further our vision as we work together to promote student achievement and well-being.

If you have any questions, please contact the school.

Track & Field – May 16th

Dear Parents/Guardians,

All students in the Junior and Intermediate divisions, grades 4 to 8, will be participating in our annual school track meet on Tuesday, May 16. A rain date has been scheduled for the next day, Wednesday, May 17. The track events will be held at the soccer field behind the school and the pit events on the north side of the school yard.  Students are required to participate because their involvement is tied to their Phys. Ed. mark.

Students need to be prepared to stay outside all day because all junior/intermediate teachers will be involved in running the events.  Please make sure your son/daughter comes to school equipped with the following articles:

– proper running shoes (NO spikes and sandals as they are dangerous to run in)

– gym shorts of an appropriate length – NO jean shorts, cut-offs or short-shorts

– T-shirt

– long sleeved shirt and loose pants to protect them from the sun when not competing

– beach towel to sit on

*** SUN SCREEN ***

*** HAT ***

Students should bring a nutritious lunch with extra drinks and snacks.

Parents are welcome to come and watch.  Parking at the school is limited and tickets have been known to be given out, so it would be appreciated if you could car pool or walk.  Please remember to sign in at the office.

Thank you,

J. McPhail and Junior/Intermediate Division Staff

Grade 8 Graduation Information

Save the Date!  Grade 8 Graduation:

Wednesday, June 21st, 2017.

This year’s Graduation Ceremony will be held at Keswick High School on Wednesday, June 21st, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the gym.  Following the graduation ceremony, there will be a reception for graduates and their families in the main foyer, and then a dinner and dance for students in the cafeteria.  Organized by the Graduation Committee and Staff, the theme of the dance this year is “Tropical Hawaiian Luau.”  The dance will end promptly at 10:30 p.m., and all students must be picked up, in person, by a parent or guardian.

This year, each student will be able to bring up to 8 guests to the Graduation Ceremony.  Additional information about the Graduation Ceremony, Reception and Dance, including ordering tickets, will be sent home later this month.

We’re also looking for donations to support our evening.  Specifically, we’re looking for:

  • Coloured plastic tablecloths
  • Grass skirts
  • Flower Leis
  • Anything Hawaiian-related

Please contact Marika Sellers, our School Council representative on the Graduation Committee, at, for more information about donating.

Should you have any questions or concerns about the graduation, please do not hesitate to call the school office.  It promises to be a wonderful evening!
