Sweater and Sweatshirt Drive

Sweater and Sweatshirt Drive for People who are Homeless

Cleaning out your closets for summer?  Monday, June 13 to Friday, June 17 we are having a sweater and sweatshirt drive for the homeless. The sweaters and sweatshirts will be donated to the LOFT van. The LOFT van goes around York Region and helps people who are homeless or are struggling with poverty. There will be a box to put your gently used sweaters and sweatshirts into in the front foyer.   Thanks for your support!

Thank you to our grade seven students for organizing this activity and creating this announcement as part of their inquiry research.

We Are Silent Day

Our “We are Silent” day was a fabulous success!  The day was filled with students from all grades being silent for personal causes such as mental health issues, poverty, animal abuse awareness and aboriginal issues.  We raised over $260.00 to contribute to the library on Georgina Island!

Through this endeavour, we have begun a conversation with the First Nations community on the Island.  We are excited to see how we can explore a mutually beneficial relationship through meaningful connection and education.

Thanks to our wonderful Watson Community for this great success!

Jump Rope For Heart!

Dear Parent/Guardian:

W.J. Watson Public School is pleased to be holding a Heart and Stroke Foundation Jump Rope For Heart event on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at 2:00 pm. In case of rain, the event will be held on May 25.  All money raised will support the Heart and Stroke Foundation in their mission to promote children’s health and fund vital heart and stroke research.

Jump Rope For Heart encourages kids to get active by skipping rope while they collect pledges for heart disease and stroke research.  They also learn the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and giving back to their community.

Participating schools can receive a portion of proceeds back from the Heart and Stroke Foundation to support the purchase of physical education equipment.

We need your help to reach W.J. Watson’s fundraising goal of $5 000.00.

Please help support your child’s fundraising efforts by registering them online at JumpRopeForHeart.ca and sending out donation requests to friends, family and colleagues.  Online fundraising is the quickest way to reach all of your contacts and online donors receive an automatic tax receipt.  Plus, when students receive their first online donation, they will receive a free skipping rope from the Heart and Stroke Foundation!

If you need assistance, please visit jumpforheart.ca and check out the step by step “how-to” resources.

Each student has already brought home a pledge envelope to collect cash and cheque donations in person.  Please ensure that their pledge envelope is returned to school on Tuesday, May 24, 2016.

Thank you in advance for your support,

Mrs. Lewis and Ms. Spear

We Are Silent – April 15

On Friday, April 15th, students are invited to participate in “We Are Silent”, an opportunity to take at least a moment to reflect and stand with those around the world who may not have a voice.  Students will choose who they would like to be silent for (e.g., animal rights, bullying, mental health, gender equality).

The Me to We Club, who is facilitating our school’s participation in “We Are Silent,” has been exploring the Truth and Reconciliation Report this year.  The group has decided to collect funds to support the library on the Georgina Island Reserve.  This focus supports both reading, and members of our larger school community.

Students in grade 5-8 who are participating will have brought home pledge forms last week (due April 18th).  Students from Kindergarten to grade 4, if interested in participating, are invited to bring in any loose change on Friday.

Should you wish to find out more about the “We Are Silent” campaign, please visit the Free the Children website.

The Book Fair is Coming!

Dear Parents and Families:

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! What better way to promote reading to our students than by supporting this important literary event.

We invite your entire family to participate by purchasing the latest and greatest in children’s books. Did you know that for every $10 you spend at the book fair, up to $6 comes directly back to our school? Your support of this vital literary event is key to helping us obtain new books and resources for our library and classrooms.

You will find hundreds of quality books at our Book Fair with a wide assortment for all reading levels. A Book Fair flyer has been sent home that provides a preview of only a FEW of the many books available to purchase at our Book Fair.
